Though expecting new levels for the Zeptolab game that was released earlier this year, players were greeted by a new in app purchase option. Following the trend of many mobile games (even paid ones) players now have the ability to purchase what equates to cheats making it easier to complete otherwise difficult levels. Reviews have been pouring in since the updates, and many of them have been in the 1-2 star range ranting about Zeptolabs recent diversification of their monitization strategy.
Noah: "We already paid for the game!!!" 2/5We paid for the game why do we have to pay for powers its stupid why would you make us pay more for powers great game needs more levels but really your are making us pay more money for powers and no new levels wow that stinks. Makes me want to puke was five stars now two stars and if you don't add new levels soon one star it will be
AnnMarie: "Update?" 1/5Was excited for an update until I saw that all it wanted was MORE MONEY. Still no new levels after months of waiting.
What should definitely be made clear is that Zeptolab is not requiring any additional money for you to receive the same experience from the day the game was purchased. Instead this new option is for players that are having a difficult time finishing the game to sort of "cheat" their way through by paying a few extra bucks for telekinesis powers. It should also be noted that the new purchases are relatively discrete, being purchased through a small icon in the upper left hand corner of the menu.
It's my thought that there is a pent up aggression towards in app purchases amongst the public that is being unduly directed at Zeptolab for this understandable, and relatively harmless, new offering. Zeptolab should tread carefully when proceeding with new levels, as additional scrutiny will be placed on their game mechanics and level design from players knowing they may be being pushed towards the IAP option, but as of today, it appears harmless.
Players are no doubt also frustrated because they have become accustomed to the regular box/level upgrades that Zeptolab offers. The excitement of a Zeptolab update was no doubt quickly chilled when they read the update notes or downloaded it to find nothing but a new option to pay more money. While these new additions to the game don't seem to warrant a downgrade in the overall rating of Cut the Rope: Experiments Zeptolab may want to consider being more vocal with the player base before making a move such as this to avoid future backlashes.
