SquareEnix Announces Release Date (UPDATE: and Price!) for Final Fantasy Dimensions

SquareEnix has finally announced an international release date for their upcoming Android and iOS throwback RPG Final Fantasy Dimensions which is August 31 2012. This means that in just over a week players will be able to bask in the glory of retro RPG goodness from a company that gave the genre clout. Final Fantasy Dimensions is modeled in a 2D turn based style RPG similar to what you find in Final Fantasy 1-6. The real catch is that this is Square's first multiplatform original Final Fantasy title for mobile devices running Android or iOS. Sure they've had their share of previous mobile games, but most are ports of previous games. It goes without saying, that this little Final Fantasy Fanboy can't wait to get his hands on it, and you can guarantee there will be a video with gameplay in the first 24 hours. Stay tuned to Pixel-Freak for more info, and watch our YouTube channel for upcoming footage!

UPDATE: Kotaku has released a post revealing the end price of Final Fantasy Dimensions and it isn't pretty. The game will be broken into four separate chapters, the first costing $2.99 and each subsequent chapter costing $9.99. Alternatively you can purchase the full shebang for $28.99. It should also be noted that these prices came from the Square Enix Europe blog, so they may not be representative of all regions. This is going to be steep for anyone's pocket, but I guess the question becomes if anyone is actually willing to spend this for a premium game on a mobile device. My initial reaction is that it's a bit steep, but I will be definitely be spending the $2.99 for the first chapter to check the game out. If it's worth $30 I'll spend the rest, but that's a pretty big if. I guess we'll find out next week!
